USC-NC nets finals seat
THE University of San Carlos North Campus (USC-NC) moved closer towards the championship title of the Milo Basketball Efficiency and Scientific Training (Best) tournament after the Warriors bagged the first seat in the finals of the Pasarelle division with a 59-55 win over the University of Cebu (UC) at the DBC courts.
Adrian Armenion bailed the Warriors out of trouble in the homestretch after burying the go-ahead trey that gave USC-NC the lead for good, after trailing in the last three quarters of the game.
The wards of USC-NC coach Roland Remedio, who is also the coach of the USC Baby Warriors in the Cesafi wars, started hot in the game after posting a 12-point edge in the first period.
But the momentum shifted to UC’s side in the second quarter and the Baby Webmasters held on to the driver’s seat all throughout the closing half until Armenion took matters into his own hands.
With UC leading, 54-52, in the waning minutes, Armenion, who scored all of his nine points from beyond the arc, unleashed his third and last trey to give USC the lead for good.
John Otida led all scorers of USC-NC with 13 markers including the team’s last four points, while Jordan Nuñeza added 10 points.
Apart from their offensive splurge, credit also goes to USC NC’s strengthened defense as they limited UC’s top scorer, Pelayo Cabañero, to a single digit performance.
Cabañero, who averages in double digit all throughout the tournament, was limited to just seven points and only Jeff Alviva, who banged in 10 points, was able to reach the double digit mark for UC.
With the win, USC-NC will face the winner between defending champion DBC and first-time semifinalist, USC-South Campus (USC-SC).
