Monday, October 23, 2006 Beermen score 101-97 win versus Ginebra in ovetime
THE San Miguel Beermen lived through a thrilling 101-97 victory in overtime over the Ginebra Kings last night in the 2006 Talk N Text PBA Philippine Cup at the Cuneta Astrodome.
The Air21 Express, on the other hand, tallied their second-straight victory after demolishing the Welcoat Dragons, 110-94, in the main game.
Crowd-favorite Ginebra clawed back into the ballgame with a stunning rally in the final canto as they erased a 13-point deficit and pull an equalizer after Mark Macapagal connected with a booming three-point shot for the Kings as the clock expired to force an extension.
After Willy Wilson, Dorian Peña and Rommel Adducul fouled out in regulation time, the Beermen turned to Danny Siegle and rookie L.A. Tenorio in the extension period and quickly regained the upperhand.
Tenorio opened the overtime period with a trey and Siegle followed by making back-to-back shots to give San Miguel the headway.
The Kings again threatened in the last 7.5 seconds after Macapagal sank another trey that trimmed Ginebra’s deficit to two points, 77-79.
But the former Ateneo Blue Eagle, Tenorio saved the Beermen from disaster as the rookie displayed nerves of steel from the free throw area and calmly sunk both shots to give San Miguel the win.
Siegle scored a career-high 28 points and pulled down 17 rebounds while making three blocks to lead the Beermen’s onslaught. (JAF)
