Jewelers down Landmasters
THE M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City Jewelers took the early leadership in the Visayas Division after turning back erstwhile tormentor, Cebu Landmasters-Mantawi, 83-75, in the Mindanao-Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Second Conference at the New Cebu Coliseum.
After a frustrating 79-83 opening-day defeat at the hands of the Landmasters, the multi-titled Jewelers made sure they would not run out of gas as they controlled the tempo of the game amidst the heavy challenge posted by the Mantawi squad.
Three-point sniper Stephen Padilla, formerly of the Alaska Aces in the PBA, paved the way for the Jewelers to secure the win as he unloaded a barrage of treys in the third period to help his team pull away, 64-49, late in the period from a close 38-37 lead at the half.
Padilla scored 11 of his 15 total points in the third canto including three triples that broke the game wide open for the Jewelers.
With their offense anchored on the unstoppable Joseph Ronald Quiñahan, the Landmasters mounted a comeback but the closest the visiting team could get was to cut their deficit to 67-73 at the 2:45 mark of the fourth canto.
Little hope
The Jewelers’ Aldrin Ocañada took away the little hope the Mantawi squad has left as he completed a three-point play that gave the Jewelers a 78-67 lead with 1:42 remaining.
Joel Solis and Luther Justiniani led the final push of the Landmasters but Ocañada again sank a jumper at the final 40.2 seconds of the game, wiping out all hopes for Mantawi of stealing a win.
Woodrow Enriquez, who displayed another stellar quarterbacking topped all scorers of the Jewelers with 19 points, while Enrico Llanto and Danny Aying added 11 and 10, respetively.
Carlos Sayon spearheaded Mantawi with 20 markers while Quiñahan contributed 10 for the Landmasters, who absorbed their second-straight defeat.
Meanwhile, over in Mindanao, host Lanao Royals gave new coach Angelito Quidlat a warm welcome as they handed the erstwhile-undefeated Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr their first defeat in six games following a thrilling 65-62 win.
It was a fitting victory for the Royals, who just changed their moniker shortly before the game and two days after replacing the embattled Chris Pontillas with Quidlat as the main bench tactician.
