Monday, October 30, 2006 Salud negotiating for Gesta to fight in the undercard
CEBU’S Mercito “Guerrero” Gesta is optimistic he will fight in the undercard of the Pacquiao-Morales III Grand Finale on Nov. 19 at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas.
Gesta said his manager Wakee Salud is negotiating for his opponent in his coming US debut.
The 19-year-old Gesta, who watched the Ground and Pound II yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum, said he believes Salud could finalize things up regarding his fight against a Mexican rival in the Pacquiao-Morales III undercard.
“Although things are still being processed, Boss Wakee said I have a big chance of seeing action in the undercard of the Pacquiao-Morales fight,” said Gesta, who holds a 11-0-1 win-loss-draw record.
“Mora’g sure pag-ingon niya,” added Gesta.
The 132-pound southpaw, who stands at 5-foot-6, is hoping to finally get his first international fight.
Last March, he was supposed to fight World Boxing Council International Featherweight champion Jeffrey Mathebula but the bout was cancelled after Gesta failed to take the physical examination before the fight.
“I don’t know what happened but I was already scheduled to fight against Mathebula,” said Gesta.
If plans push through, the undercard fight in the Pacquaio-Morales tiff will be his first fight abroad and his biggest so far.
Salud, for his part, said that if he could not let Gesta fight in the undercard bout of the Nov. 19 fight, then he would schedule Gesta to fight in the undercard of the Bobby Pacquiao-Hector Velazquez bout on Nov. 16 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
“Right now, I’m praying that I’ll be paired off with an opponent in the Pacquiao-Morales fight,” said Gesta. (JAF)
