Monday, October 30, 2006 Sta. Fe wins Cluster IV final, P20T
MEDELLIN squandered its home court edge and bowed to Sta. Fe in the Cluster IV final of the Gov. Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball Cup for Women yesterday.
Sta. Fe, which had to travel from Bantayan Island to Medellin town, conquered the hosts in two easy sets, 25-15, 25-23, to win the cluster title and pocket the P20,000 top purse.
Medellin must have succumbed to exhaustion after playing in two other games earlier in the day.
Santa Fe had won the subcluster last Saturday in Batanyan Island, while Medellin earned the finals berth after topping yesterday's elimination in the mainland. It survived Tabogon, 25-23, 11-25, 25-22 and sailed to an easy win over San Remigio, 25-20, 25-8.
Supporters
A bevy of supporters had come out to cheer on Medellin including town officials. Medelling won P10,000 consolation prize.
Santa Fe had leaned on its powerhouse line up to take the victory. It is composed of varsity team members of Southwestern University and University of Cebu.
Santa Fe and Medellin will join the other top two teams from the other cluster for the next round of action in the competition. It joins Talisay and Minglanilla (Cluster I), Toledo and Balamban (Cluster II), Boljoon and Badian (Cluster III) in the winners circle. (MCB)
