Quijano nips RP 9-ball Open qualifier Cusi

FORMER Cebu Billiards King Victorino “Paklay” Quijano booted out 2006 Philippine 9-ball Open qualifier Antonio “Kalot” Cusi of Ormoc City, 7-1, to join 15 others in the round of 16 of the 2006 Superbalita International 9-ball Challenge Class B division yesterday at the Gaisano Bowlingplex in Banilad.

The 61-year-old veteran cue artist from Velphal Village in Minglanilla, Quijano, who holds the distinction of stealing victories from Efren “Bata” Reyes, Django Bustamante and Warren Kiamco in the 70s, used his broad experience in dumping the younger Cusi as the Cebuano played safe most of the time by hiding the cue ball.

Aside from his mental game, Quijano also got lucky with the breaks after he cleaned up three racks with combination shots to the 9-ball.

“I was lucky in most of my breaks but most of the time, I also got clear shots from his errors,” said Quijano.

Also earning a spot to the next round was Ernest “The Champ” Rosco of Cebu City, who defeated veteran Nicholas “Sirnick” Ariba, 7-2.

Round of 16

Quijano and Rosco will be joined in the round of 16 by Glenford “Glen Cagayan” Autor of Cagayan de Oro City, who prevailed over Ryan “Archie” Maglasang of Zamboanga City, 7-5, Jurlic “Niger” Tabuñag of Kidapawan City, who nipped Boots Agusto of Opon, 7-6, Noel “Noel Bacolod” Causing of Bacolod City, who outlasted Vicente Lopez of Liloan City, 7-5, and Noriel “Tata Dipolog” Pagador of Dipolog City, who bested Xander Cruz, 7-5.

Also making it to the next phase are Ruel “Kiking Iligan” Aclao of Iligan City, who defeated Oliver Yap, 7-3 and Joel Malaki of Cebu City, who won over Joecel Jaranilla, 7-2.

The other qualifiers include Jovito Ortiz, Carl Carlo, Maxwell Bernadez, Daryl Abaquita, Kirby Ybañes, Mark Gregg Gestopa, Ramon Torralba and high school division defending champion Marvin Gentapa.

Gentapa, though, failed in his bid to defend his high school division crown after losing to Dario Vidal of Paja Night High School, 6-7, in the semifinals.

The victory will pit Vidal against Gestopa for the high school division finals on Nov. 12.

Finals

In the elementary division, Jan Mark Alegado of South City Central School and John Niko Romblon of Basak Elementary School arranged a finals duel between themselves after disposing their foes in the semis.

Alegado beat Mhar Sagarino, 7-4, while Romblon defeated Mark Philip Rodriguez of Barili, Cebu, 7-6. (JAF)
