Sun.Star Cebu nails 1st NBAC win v. Bombo

AFTER a heart-breaking loss to The Freeman/DYLA last week, Sun.Star Cebu found its rhythm yesterday as it logged its first victory in two starts after routing Bombo Radyo, 66-55, in the 2006 Newsmen Basketball Association of Cebu (NBAC)-Gov. Gwen Garcia Cup at the Cogon Ramos Sports Complex.

The comebacking Emilio Migallen Jr. fired a game-high 19 points in leading the three-time NBAC champion Sun.Star to victory, while MVP Efren Lonzon added 15 points to help the team even its win-loss record.

After fighting a close game in the first two periods, Sun.Star got the needed breaks in the third canto after Migallen’s trey with five minutes left in the period sparked a run that erected a 55-50 edge going into the final quarter.

Bombo Radyo (1-2) bounced back into the game in the opening minutes of the fourth period as it employed effective defensive ploys that disrupted Migallen and Lonzon’s offensive flow while stepping up on its offense with Rey Gealon providing the points.

Sun.Star, however, wasn’t to be denied of the victory as the silent but potent trio of Erwin “The Net” Lirazan, Arni “The Drive” Aclao and Allan “Pointman” Defensor went to work in taking up the scoring cudgels, paving the way for the team to finally break the game wide open.

Lirazan, who nailed three points in the first half, poured six more in the final half to finish with nine along with Jaime Frias, while Aclao and Defensor added six apiece.

Sun.Star, which played without wingman Jade Violeta, also dominated the rebound wars and translated this to points in outgunning the Bombo quintet.

Sun.Star (64)-Migallen 19, Lonzon 15, Frias 9, Lirazan 9, Aclao 6, Defensor 6, Campaña 2. Bombo Radyo (55)-Mamalias 18, Gealon 16, Yap 13, Tabanao 4, Dabatos 4. (JAF)
