USPF spikers rule

THE University of Southern Philippines-Foundation (USPF) Baby Panthers complete their dominance of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc.’s (Cesafi) volleyball event after snaring the titles in the boys and girls divisions yesterday at the University of San Carlos North Campus (USC-NC) gym.

The Baby Panthers’ girls team, who also helped the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (Cviraa) bag the gold in secondary girls volleyball of the 2006 Naga City Palarong Pambansa, plucked the sweeter title among the two USP-F teams after successfully defending their title for the sixth straight year.

The USPF lady spikers came out uncontested in their title hunt as they booted out the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Baby Jaguars in their championship game to sweep all their assignments in the tournament and finish with an immaculate 4-0 win-loss record.

The girls team of the Baby Jaguars, who also sported a clean 3-0 win-loss slate before the game, finished second with a 3-1 win-loss record after dropping the most important match of the tournament in favor of USPF, 22-25 and 10-25.

The Baby Panthers’ boys team, on the other hand, ended their two-year jinx versus the Baby Jaguars after they unseated the latter to snare the championship crown.

The Baby Panthers, runners up to USJ-R in the past two years, exacted sweet revenge over their tormentor after dominating their championship match up against the Baby Jaguars, 25-15 and 25-19, and complete USPF’s twinkill in the tournament.

The Baby Panthers’ Johnrey Opone and Danika Gendrauli were named Most Valuable Players in the respective divisions.

Before their title match versus the Baby Jaguars, the girls squad of USP-F first demolished the University of San Carlos (USC) Baby Warriors in three grueling sets, 25-21, 25-12, 25-22, to bag the first seat in the finals.

The Baby Jaguars followed USPF into the championship round after registering a victory over the University of Cebu (UC) Baby Webmasters, 25-13 and 25-14.

In the boys division, the Baby Jaguars made their way into the final round with a 25-17 and 25-10 straight sets win over Don Bosco College (DBC) Baby Greywolves and USC, 25-16 and 25-18, while USP-F barged into the championship round with a dominant win over USC, 25-13 and 25-9. (MCB)
