1T guns for rookie policemen

MORE than 1,000 pieces of 9 mm pistols from Camp Crame were given to the Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 for use by the rookie policemen who will help secure the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit next month.

Of the 1,250 pistols, 375 will be given to the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO), Supt. Melvin Gayotin said.

The Cebu Provincial Police Office and the Mandaue City Police Office will also be receiving firearms for their respective rookie policemen.

Gayotin, acting CCPO director, told reporters yesterday the firearms will be distributed to the rookie policemen who are on their six-month field training program (FTP).

He ordered the administrative section yesterday to relay a message to all the police stations and special units requiring all the 375 FTP policemen to report to the CCPO firing range at 8 a.m. tomorrow for a familiarization firing.

Gayotin said the FTP policemen will also be taught gun safety and other techniques.

Meanwhile, the Bureau of Customs (BOC) Sub-Port of Mactan will submit to the Asean summit National Organizing Committee an action plan on the inspection of baggage of the heads of state and their entourage.

Customs law

Sub-Port Collector Ernesto Urbano said that if the law will be followed, customs officials and personnel especially the examiners, appraisers, boarding team officers and aircraft inspectors will be the first to meet the Asean summit participants upon their arrival at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport.

However, since the summit is a meeting of presidents and prime ministers of the countries under the Asean, the customs bureau must coordinate with various government agencies tasked to secure the participants.

“What if we implement the provisions of the Tariff and Customs Code and the security forces of the heads of state will prevent us from checking their baggage? This must be settled before the summit,” Urbano said.

An action plan will prevent overlapping of assignments and responsibilities among Philippine authorities and those of the security forces and entourage of the summit delegates.

Urbano will submit the action plan in the next meeting of the National Organizing Committee headed by Ambassador Marciano Paynor and the Cebu Organizing Committee led by Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia. (JST/EOB)
