Tuesday, November 07, 2006 Catmon defends guv cup cluster title
CATMON banked on its young players to defend the Cluster V title of the Gov. Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball Cup for Women as they trounced Compostela in straight sets last Sunday in Catmon.
Catmon defeated Com-postela, 25-18, 25-21 to win the P20,000 top purse.
The two teams will join the other top finalists from the other clusters in search of the over-all tiara.
The Catmon gym had turned into a virtual circus as supporters from both squads had become so unruly that the mayors from both municipalities, who were there to cheer for their squads, had to send some police officers to keep the crowd in check.
Catmon's powerhouse team is composed mostly of members of the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association, which came out champions in the elementary division. Former University of San Carlos stalwart Cherry Montalbo skippers the team.
The tournament's youngest player, 11-year-old Diane Jade Brian, also comes from Catmon and is the team's libero.
In the crossover semifinals, Catmon and Com-postela had outclassed their invaders from Camotes Island, who were virtually defenseless against the mainland teams.
Catmon defeated Pilar, 24-7, 25-21, while Com-postela thrashed San Francisco, 25-11, 25-8.
Cluster VI, the final leg, will be held this weekend in Mandaue City. Defending over-all champion Lapu-Lapu is a member of Cluster VI. (MCB)
