Tuesday, November 07, 2006 Mantawi, GenSan bury MVBA foes
THE CEBU Landmasters-Mantawi showed no mercy as it banked on the hot shooting of Alex Cainglet for an emphatic 95-58 win over the Toyota-Iloilo Turbos in the Visayas Division of the MVBA Second Conference at the Mandaue City Sports Complex Sunday night.
Down in Mindanao, the MP Warriors-GenSan were also merciless in handing the Lanao Royals a 91-50 beating at the South Cotabato Gym and Cultural Center in Koronadal.
Cainglet was a man possessed for the Jun Tan mentored-Landmasters as the former University of Cebu Webmaster drilled trey after trey to lead the Mantawi squad to an easy victory.
Cainglet’s shooting helped the Landmasters broke away from a tight first quarter starting with a 17-0 run that spanned late in the first quarter to early in the second canto.
Elben Leonida broke the silence for Iloilo only to be met by another barrage of Landmasters points after a 15-6 blitz that gave Mantawi a 52-24 lead at halftime.
Headache
After Cainglet gave the Turbos a lot of headache in the defensive end, Carlos Sayon, Richard Ian Saladaga and Abe Galinato joined the scoring spree to give the Landmasters a 71-41 lead going into the final frame.
The Landmasters never looked back and put up the biggest lead of the game at 91-52 before cruising to their easy win.
The weary Turbos found no answer despite the efforts of lanky forward Ruel Balgos, Elben Leonida and former University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguar Henry Sencil, while the Landmasters continued with the massacre to pick its second victory.
Cellar
The Cebu Landmasters of Joe Soberano now join MLSDF-Talisay City Aquastars at second place in the Visayas with 2-2 cards, while Toyota Iloilo of Robert Uy languished at the cellar with a 0-2 start.
Cainglet topped all scorers with 29 markers, while Sayon contributed 12 and Galinato and Saladaga finished with 11 points each. Balgos, Leonida and Sencil combined for 45 points for Iloilo’s second defeat.
Tonight, the Turbos will go for their first victory but it will be a tough job as they play against Division leader M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City Jewelers at the Cebu Coliseum.
