Tuesday, November 07, 2006 Tibod beats Diano to top Rose Chess
BONN Tibod pulled a string of upsets to rule the newly revived 2006 Rose Pharmacy Rapid Chess Tournament last Saturday night at the Bibo Chess Club.
The sluggish Tibod, a former mainstay of the then Cebu Central Colleges – now the University of Cebu – axed candidate master Eden “GM” Diano in the last round to finish with six points and bag the title.
He had a break in the earlier rounds after pulling an upset victory over 2006 La Union Open champion Merben Roque, who also defeated Grandmaster Rogelio Antonio, in the fourth round and candidate master Kim Steven Yap in the fifth round.
“I didn’t expect that kind of performance because I didn’t have much sleep,” said Tibod, who played blitz chess with Rodrigo Alejandre until the early morning before the event. (JAF)
