Lapu, Mandaue complete last 8

LAPU-Lapu and Mandaue Cities complete the quarterfinals cast of the of the Gov. Gwen Garcia Unity Volleyball Cup for Women, after taking the top two spots of cluster VI yesterday at the Consolacion Sports Complex.

Lapu-Lapu had yanked Mandaue out of the Cluster VI throne as it topped the leg in an emphatic fashion, wrapping up the elimination round with a clean slate after winning all four of its assignments.

Lapu-Lapu, the defending over-all champion of the Gov Cup tourney, capped its elimination round exploits with a 25-6, 25-14 bashing of Cordova, in yesterday’s final offering.

Mandaue, last year’s Cluster VI champion, settled for second place after suffering one loss handed to them by Lapu-Lapu. Mandaue defeated Cordova 25-6, 25-10 yesterday to end the elimination round with a 3-1 win-loss ledger.

The other game yesterday saw Lilo-an outclassing home team Consolacion, 25-21, 20-25, 25-11, but the win was for naught as Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue already secured the tickets to the next round of the province-wide tournament.

With this, the top two teams will join the other teams from the five other clusters that will see action in the knock out quarterfinal round slated on Dec. 2 at the Mandaue City Sports Complex.

The technical team will be taking a much-needed time out this weekend to take respite from going around Cebu for more than two months. On the 25th, the top 12 teams from six clusters will be awarded their corresponding cash prizes in a ceremony at the Capitol Social Hall.

Cluster champions will receive P20,000, while runners up will get P10,000. Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu will be joining other cluster winners Talisay and Minglanilla (Cluster I), Toledo and Balamban (Cluster II), Boljoon and Badian (Cluster III), Santa Fe and Medellin (Cluster IV) and Catmon and Compostela (Cluster V).
