Makinano wins 6, loses 1 in 7-board simultaneous match

FIDE Master Anthony Makinano pulled six wins and one loss in the Rose Pharmacy-sponsored seven-board simultaneous match last Saturday at the Bibo Chess Club in P.Gomez-Jakosalem Sts.

Makinano, wielding all white pieces, defeated Mark Mangubat in 45 moves of the French Defense, Joel Pacuribot in 30 moves of the Queen’s Indian Defense, Edwel Alesna of 52 moves of the Alekhine Defense, Rodrigo Alejandre in 55 moves of the English Opening and Bonjo Lanorias in 60 moves of the Modern Benoni Defense.

Revenge

The 37-year-old FM also exacted revenge over youthful conqueror Kim Steven Yap of the University of San Carlos (USC) in 50 moves of positional struggle in the English Opening.

However, only veteran Carlos “Pipo” Moreno prevailed over the master after 62 moves of the nerve-wracking Trompowsky Opening.

Despite the loss, Makinano pocketed P950.

Prize money

Makinano received P150 for each victory, the same amount Moreno received for beating him. The losers got P50 each.

“This is good training to hone my skills,” said Makinano, who will be going for his second International Master norm in the Nov. 17-23 President Arroyo Cup International Chess Tournament at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

If he fails to get his second IM norm in the PGMA Cup, he can still get it in the Singapore Open Chess Tournament in December this year. (JAF)
