WBO sets purse bidding date for Montiel-Gorres title fight

THE World Boxing Organization (WBO) has ordered a purse bidding open to all promoters who want to promote the superfly-weight championship between champion Fernando Montiel of Mexico and Filipino mandatory challenger Z "The Dream" Gorres on Nov. 17 at the WBO Headquarters in Puerto Rico.

Order

WBO championship committee chairman Luis Batista-Salas ordered the bidding upon the request of Cebuano promoter Sammy Gello-ani, who sent the letter last Tuesday.

"As per Article 11 of the enclosed copy of the WBO Rules and Regulations for World Championship Contests, and the request of the involved promoters, please be advised that a purse bid will be held at 1100 hrs on Nov. 17, 2006 at the following site: World Boxing Organization Headquarters 1056 Muñoz Rivera Avenue Suite 711 San Juan, Puerto Rico," Batista-Salas said in his letter addressed to all WBO Promoters.

Gello-ani, the local promoter of the ALA Boys, is a certified WBO promoter after having organized and promoted four WBO sanctioned contests.

Gello-ani and Team Gorres will be represented by Sampson Lewkowicz, an international matchmaker connected with Golden Boy Promotions.

Rules

"The Championship Committee has approved the bid. The minimum acceptable bid for the Jr. Bantamweight title is $100,000. (And) In accordance with the WBO Championship Rules and Regulations, the bid will be presided by the president Francisco Valcarcel," the letter continued.

Team Gorres had pursued a purse bidding after GBP vice president Eric Gomez said the Montiel camp showed no interest in fighting Gorres, who was also mandated to fight the Mexican champion during the WBO convention in October.

If the result of the bid will be favorable to Team Gorres, Gello-ani promised to hold the championship fight in the Philippines early next year.

"I can assure you that if ever we will win in this purse bidding we will hold the championship fight in the Philippines, particularly in Cebu," assured Gello-ani. (RCM)
