500 athletes to join dancesport event in City Olympics

A RECORD field of dance athletes are expected to compete in the very first edition of the Cebu City Olympics 1st Inter-school Dancesport Challenge 2006 next weekend at the University of San Carlos Gym.

Organizers expect not less than 500 athletes to troop to the venue on Nov. 26. The tournament is still part of the Cebu City Olympics, although the city will shell out for cash prizes to the winners. Handing of cash prizes to winners is a first for a City Olympics event.

The Cebu City Olympics, a multi-event sporting meet, opens this weekend at the Cebu City Sports Center.

Categories

The categories to be contested in the dancesport competition are the Elementary, Secondary and Tertiary, where dancers strut their wares in the Latin and Modern Standard events. The dances included in the Latin competition are Chachacha, Rumba and Jive, while the Modern Standard event features Waltz, Tango and Quickstep.

The champion in the elementary and secondary classes will get P3, 000, while tertiary division winners will get P5,000 plus an additional P5, 000 for the coach.

The tournament also serves as a tryout for those who want to join the renowned Dancesport Team Cebu City. The winners will gain automatic entry to the Prime Team training pool of the DTCC.

Free workshop

The school bagging the over-all championship will receive a trophy and free two-month worth of workshop from DTCC instructors.

Interested participants can get the Official Entry Forms at the E-Motions DanceSport Training Center, Cebu City Sports Center, Osmeña Blvd., Cebu City.

This weekend, DTCC is poised at defending its national crown during the National Championships slated this Saturday at the Philsports Arena. On Sunday, the Cebuanos will be competing in the International Competition to be held on the same venue. (MCB)
