Cebu City to spend P8.2M for SRP signs

CEBU City Hall will spend P8.2 million to build a concrete welcome sign at the South Road Properties (SRP) that will look “a bit like the 45-foot-tall Hollywood sign.”

The SRP signage, made of tons of concrete and stainless steel, will be installed on top of a concrete substructure that will be buried on a manmade miniature hill.

The hill is part of the infrastructure horizontal development that the City Government contracted with TOA Construction in its P450-million undertaking in 2002.

This time, the City Government will let another construction firm develop and landscape the miniature hill.

The P8.2 million contract of the project, however, did not stipulate how much each welcome letters will cost.

City Administrator Francisco Fernandez, in an interview, said it will look like the sign that promoted Hollywood in 1923.

The City Council yesterday approved without discussion a resolution authorizing Mayor Tomas Osmeña to enter into a contract with Ana Construction represented by its manager Edgardo Maningo for the project.

The approval was based on the bids and awards committee’s resolution recommending that the contract be awarded to the contractor with the lowest calculated and responsive bid last Nov. 8.

“It’s going to look like the one in Hollywood. When you enter the South Coastal Road you will see the sign welcoming you to the SRP. Basta the impact is like that of Hollywood,” Fernandez told Sun.Star Cebu.

He said part of Ana Construction’s obligation will be to build a retaining concrete wall on top of the hill where a restobar may be put up. (GAC)
