Thursday, November 23, 2006 Speak out: 'Every child a reader' program By Evelyn M. Muntilla Cambado Elementary School Bogo District 1, Bogo Cebu
The 'every child a reader' program is of great importance to the elementary curriculum. Reading enhances a child’s ability to learn more about life. Every pupil from all grade levels should be functionally literate.
But the task of the teacher doesn’t stop after successfully teaching the students how to read. The teacher must also teach the students how to comprehend what they read.
The teacher must raise the students’ comprehension of the printed material to a higher level of understanding because not all information contained in books are constructive to a student’s growth. The teacher should teach the students how to be critical readers.
The teacher therefore should guide the students in their reading and and motivate them to learn about life through the printed word.
