FRANCISCO Abugho and Bonn Tibod ruled in their respective divisions of the 1st RComtech Class A Invitational Chess Tournament last Monday at the St. Martin de Porrest Chess Hall in Lapu-Lapu City.
Abugho, a former Cebu blitz king, scored 5.5 points after splitting the point with Lapu-Lapu City's Joel Fernan in the final sixth round to rule the 15-minute rapid chess category title.
Carlos "Pipo" Moreno settled for second place with five points after prevailing over Glycel Gepiga in the last round, while Fernan settled third with 4.5 points.
Tibod, on the other hand, defeated the equally strong Allan Salientes in the final fifth round to capture the 5-minute Blitz chess category title.
Tibod and Mark Mangubat finished with 4.5 points apiece, but Tibod took outright first place after prevailing in the tiebreak scores.
Mangubat landed second place while Leonardo Alidani settled for third place with four points.
Second title
Last Sunday, Miguel Banibane won his second title this year in the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association Monthly Qualifying tournament at Bibo Chess Club on P.Gomez-Jakosalem Sts.
Banibane and Nikki Estenor completed four points each, but Banibane scored supreme tiebreak points to take first place, while Estenor had to take second spot.
After a draw with Banibane in the final fifth round, Mandy Baria scored 3.5 points to take third place.
Maggi Dionson and Manuel Abucay settled for fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Last Saturday, PhilExport surprised Opascor, 7.5-4.5, in the 2006 Opascor-PhilExport Chess Team Dual Meet held at Gaisano Bowlingplex Lobby. (JAF)
