Saturday, November 25, 2006 Speak out: P8.2M for SRP signs By Susan G. Matura
Cebu City Council approved the P8.2M project for SRP signs to be built on a man-made miniature hill that would look like the one in Hollywood.
Those are exactly how it was printed in one of the widely read local newspapers we have in Cebu that caught my attention. I cannot help but express my reaction for I felt a tinge of pain deep inside me.
For almost a week now, I have read in the papers and heard on radio about this demolition of houses not only in one area in Cebu City. I don’t know any of those people affected by the demolition, but I could simply feel the fear they felt after being given a 30-day grace period to vacate the lots they are occupying.
Most of these people have lived there all their lives and they actually have nowhere to go. It is for this reason that I feel extremely sad that our government is willing to spend a fortune for a welcome sign for the Asean summit delegates if only to look “good” in the eyes of our visitors.
