Districts 6, 11 rule City Olympics

DISTRICTS 6 and 11 will lead the Cebu City Niños in the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVRAA) meet after ruling the over-all crown in their respective divisions in the 16th Cebu City Olympics, which culminated yesterday at the University of San Carlos (USC) gym.

District Six, powered by the University of Cebu (UC), finished the multi-event competition with 53 gold, 34 silver and 18 bronze medals to capture the secondary division over-all title.

District 11, on the other hand, compiled a total of 41-17-18 gold-silver-bronze tally to cop the elementary division over-all title.

District Six officially sealed its title in the final day after the UC Baby Webmasters outlasted the University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Green Lancers, 76-57, in overtime in their secondary basketball boys finals at the Cebu City Sports Center.

District 14, represented solely by the Abellana National High School (ANHS), finished second in the secondary division with its over-all medal tally of 38 gold, 33 silver and 25 bronze medals.

District 13 bagged third place with a 21-13-20 gold-silver-bronze medal count.

Completing the top three teams in the elementary section are: District Eight (23-15-18) at second and District Four (21-30-3) at third.

In the tertiary division, which was participated in by non-varsity athletes, the Cebu Doctors University (CDU) garnered the over-all title after finishing with a gold-silver-bronze tally of 37-16-25, while UC (29-13-12) and Cebu Normal University (6-6-12), settled for the second and third places, respectively.

In dancesports at the USC Gym, Unit 14 and Unit Three came out on top after winning all of the gold medals at stake in their respective divisions.

Meanwhile, leading the athletes who have won two gold medals or more in the weeklong meet are gymnasts Vinette Marie Pacaña and Marie Carmelli Garrovillo and tankers Loren Dale Echavez and Casey Kho, who all bagged five gold medals each.

Pacaña and Garrovillo bagged their gold medals in their respective divisions of the individual rhythmic sportive gymnastics, which ended last week.

Echavez and Kho had those medals in the swimming event.

Florane Apawan of Unit Three pulled four medals in the girls secondary archery, while her male countepart, Dan Christian Ramos, pocketed three gold medals in the boys secondary archery.

Among those who won three gold medals in the secondary division were UC’s Roxanne Camay (shot put, discus throw and javelin throw), Lindley Navaja (Boys 100m, 200m and 400m runs), Lera dela Calzada (Girls 100m, 200m and 400m runs, Sheena Gacayan (Girls 800m, 1,500m and 3,000m runs), and swimmer Paula Abigail Vega of USC.

Also bagging three gold medals in the tertiary division was CDU’s Juvelyn Magnate won gold medals in the 800m, 1,500m and 3,000m runs, while Christine Sesante of City Central School won three gold medals in the elementary division swimming.

Winning two gold medals in the elementary division are tracksters Edzel Ardiante, Hazel Retavalle, Mark Aljun Palapar, Daisy Lawas, Abigail Flores, Kenneth Monzon, Adrianne Madequillo and Sarah Mae Napoles.

Those who won two gold medals each in the secondary division were Jasper Lance Basister, Don Lorenz Bontilo, Dharl Pitogo, John Solon and Michael David Vega.

The tertiary athletes who snared two gold medals each were Ma. Victoria Fiques, Charlie Berberio, Philip Veneracion, and Sarah Wang. (JAF)
