USJ-R routs FU 80-50, grabs solo lead in VAAA Bracket A

THE University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars romped to its third straight victory to claim the temporary lead of Bracket A after trashing host Foundation University Greyhounds, 80-50, in the Visayas Amateur Athletic Association over the weekend in Dumaguete City.

Debut

The Asian College of Science and Technology (Acsat) Lightning, on the other hand, is closing fast on Bracket B leader University of San Carlos Warriors following its 89-76 win over the debuting Western Leyte College in the main game.

The game was played close in the first quarter but the Greyhounds could not sustain their momentum as the taller and quicker Jaguars started to pull away in the second after erecting a 40-25 lead at halftime.

With the match going the Jaguars way, USJ-R then put the game for good in the third outscoring the host team 22-11 for a 62-36 lead entering the last quarter.

In the main match, the Acsat Lightnings were quick to erect a 51-34 cushion on the first half before allowing WLC to crawl back in the final half.

Defense

However, its good defense allowed them to hang on with the win with Mike Viliran dropping 32 points for the Lightnings’ third win in four games.

Next weekend, the games will shift to Ormoc City with the WLC squad hosting the Silliman University Stallions on Saturday and Bracket B leader, the University of San Carlos Warriors on Sunday.
