DOJ forms panel for summit

A SPECIAL team of prosecutors has been formed to handle inquest and preliminary investigation duties during the four days of the Asean summit in Cebu.

Regional State Prosecutor Antonio Arellano created the teams in compliance with Department Order 913 signed by Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez Sr.

Arellano, in an interview yesterday, said the team will process summit-related incidents but won’t be limited to these alone.

“The (special team) shall conduct, whenever the exigency arises, the immediate and appropriate preliminary investigation or inquest proceedings and, if warranted by the evidence, to file the information and prosecute the same before the court,” read Department Order 913, dated Nov. 29.

The team, which will be headed by Undersecretary Fidel Exconde Jr. who is based in Manila, is made up of Arellano, State Prosecutors Graeme Elmido and Llena Ipong and Prosecutor Alain Gallego.

Sub-teams will be formed under the head prosecutors of Cebu Province, Cebu City, Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu offices.

The armed operatives of the department’s witness protection branch will also be mobilized. (KNR)
