Dumpit insists shooting of ‘thief’ justified

AS LONG as he does not go to jail, SPO1 Adonis Dumpit is willing to undergo a summary administrative hearing for the shooting of a robbery suspect, a minor, in 2004.

Dumpit said he will also welcome the decision, even if it means he will be dismissed from service.

At Cebu City Hall yesterday, Dumpit told reporters he expects more threats once he is no longer in service. But he said he no longer fears for his life.

Rules of engagement

“Kanang mga hulga permanente man na. Basta para nako, justified gyud to ug nisubay gyud ko sa rules of engagement. Pero just in case madutlan ko ug ma-dismiss, okay ra basta dili lang ko mapriso (Threats are normal. For me, I followed the rules of engagement. But if I get dismissed, it’s fine with me, as long as I don’t go to jail),” he said.

National Police Commission (Napolcom) Director Estrella Avena has approved the recommendation of Insp. Procopio Gaquit to file charges against Dumpit for “grave misconduct.”

Dumpit was accused of shooting to death suspected robber Ronron Go in Sitio Villagonzalo in Barangay Tejero in December 2004.

But the policeman stood by his statement that he only acted in self defense .

‘Better to kill’

“Ug naay magbinuang, maayo pag ako na lang mopatay kaysa akoy mamatay... Kaming mga pulis naay motto nga ‘to go home alive’ kay mga pamilyado gud mi (If anybody causes trouble, it’s better to kill than to be killed. We policemen have a motto, ‘to go home alive,’ because we also have families),” Dumpit said. (LCR)
