5 brys. seek funds for Asean activities
ASIDE from the 29 mountain barangays that got P100,000 each from Cebu City Hall, five more are asking for assistance for their barangay activities during the Asean summit.
Barangays Pitos, Talamban, San Jose, Binaliw and Bacayan also want to hold “Balik Bukid” festivities from Dec. 10 to 14.
The five barangay captains asked for P200,000 so they can hold a nightly concert, bingo social and boxing matches.

The activities will be held jointly with Barangays Budlaan, Pulangbato and Agsungot, which already got P100,000 each from City Hall.
“We plan to have the activities of all eight barangays in just one venue in Barangay Pulangbato so it won’t be too expensive. The mayor already agreed but we are still waiting for the money,” Pit-os Barangay Captain Nilo Tariman said.
No recall
In a news conference last Monday, Mayor Tomas Osmeña said he will not recall the ordinance granting financial assistance to 29 barangays for their Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit activities even if the holidays were cancelled.
The City Council set aside last August P2.9 million for the mountain barangays to hold festivities, so they can keep their constituents from going to Cebu City proper during the Asean summit starting this Sunday.
“We cannot reverse it, I don’t like reversing things. I still think it will help decongest the urban areas,” he told reporters.
Barangays Adlaon, Agsungot, Bacayan, Babag, Binaliw, Bonbon, Budlaan, Buhisan, Buot-Taup, Busay, Cambinocot, Guba, Kalunasan, Lusaran, Mabini, Malubog, Pamutan, Paril, Pulangbato, Pung-ol Sibugay, Sapangdaku, Sinsin, Sirao, Sudlon I, Sudlon II, Tabunan, Tagbao, Taptap, and Toong were already given P100,000 each.
Every December
Osmeña said that if the people enjoy themselves during their activities, the barangays will be allowed to organize a “Balik Bukid” program every December.
“If the people have a nice time, then we’ll do it every year. It can be the time of the year that people can look forward to, when they can go up to the mountain barangays,” he added. (LCR)
