Friday, December 08, 2006 Speak out: Science High’s two faces By Nikko Karlo Robles Fourth Year Student Cebu City National Science High School
THE Cebu City National Science High School has been reputed to be one of the prestigious institutions not only in Cebu City or in the region but in the country as well.
I am part of the institution. Or at least, I still am.
Sci-Hi, as my school is known, is different. It is a public school with more extraordinary ideas than most expensive private campuses.
But there is more to learn there.
In my four years study in Sci-Hi, I have seen different faces of reality, and this experience has given me a preview on how life outside the campus really works.
A life sustained by prejudices, biases and "palakasay."
My school does not only give its intellectuals the chance to shine in their selected fields; they are also given the chance to differentiate right from wrong.
They are taught the values of fighting for the good and for what they believe in---and this is what I am practicing now.
Despite the countless dilemmas and systemic defects (ask our principal, she knows a good deal about it), Sci Hi scholars continue to uphold the excellence expected from them.
They develop their mental gifts and, at the same time, experience reality.
This is how a "school" should exist.
It trains students to be mentally and emotionally proficient, to be independent in their decisions and to know how to assert their rights.
The question is, are you ready to enroll your child in an institution that not only offers academic challenges but also "emotional" stress brought about by the authorities' partisan choices and decisions?
