Barrita: Sunshine Joe
By Eddie O. Barrita
Small Bites

HOUSE Speaker Joe de Venecia, the late Teddy Benigno once said, is a “peddler of bottled sunshine” and “can sell anything under the sun.”

But he suddenly stopped selling his constituent assembly (Con-Ass) and has turned to a constitutional convention (Con-Con) as a mode to amend the Charter.

No Con-Ass buyers, Sunshine Joe?

Speaker de Venecia said the shift from Con-Ass to Con-Con was borne out of their “desire on the eve of

Christmas to unite the country and the Filipino people.”

Or is it because they have seen the country and the Filipino people are united against Con-Ass?

***

Cebu City south district Rep. Antonio “Tony” Cuenco said he will make sure candidates for the Con-Con seats are not endorsed by political parties or politicians.

Make sure too, we will not have a Con-Con of congressional spouses and children.

I received a text message calling for support to Charter change.

It called for the inclusion of this provision in the amended Charter:

“Politicians must serve two terms only---one in office and one in jail.”

It did not specify which term should be longer.

Cebu’s hotels are reportedly offering special discounted rates due to cancellation of room reservations after organizers postponed the 12th Asean summit to early January.

Hotel guests enjoying discounts won’t blame the law of supply and demand this time.

Police Regional Office 7 Director Silverio Alarcio Jr. said there are no signs of terrorists in Cebu.

“Let’s look for them,” he told in jest a national Muslim leader who visited him.

I hope they’ll find none because there was none.
