Carter resets Nets’ record

GREATER Cebu Sports Organizing Committee (GCSoc) founder Jonathan Guardo yesterday announced that they will give priority to boxing in the delegation for the Arafura Games in summer of next year in Darwin Australia.

"We will be coordinating with the boxing stable of (Antonio) Bidoy Aldeguer so that we could send boxers to compete in Darwin," said Guardo, who added that boxing is medal prospect owing to its popularity to the Filipinos and the caliber of boxers that Aldeguer produces.

Aldeguer's ALA boxing stable has produced the likes of Rey Boomboom Bautista, who had started training with them in the pre-amateur stages.

In the Arafura Games, boxing is open to male and female pugs aged 17 and above and the divisions range from light flyweight (48 kg) to super heavyweight (+91kg).

Aside from boxing, Guardo said that they are also considering lawn tennis and swimming, since it had produced gold medals last year. The group will also send players in sepak takraw.

Sepak takraw in the Arafura Games, according to its official website, is considered the biggest sepak takraw tournament in a multi-sport event outside Asia.

GCSoc Executive Director Allan Torrevillas on the other hand said that he is proposing to send a badminton team to the biennial games. However, Guardo had earlier said that for GCSoc's initial project, they are planning to limit the delegation to just 20 athletes and 5 officials.

Meanwhile, yesterday, Guardo renewed his collaboration with former Filipino community-partner in Australia that would help them in the billeting of the athletes.

"They already served as foster parents to our athletes in the past and they expressed their willingness to help," Guardo added. (MCB)
