Navy officer’s wife killed in gang war

A WIFE of a Navy officer died and another woman was injured during a fight between two groups of youngsters at dawn yesterday in Sitio Putat Bagong Bayan, Barangay Tinago, Cebu City.

A 16-year-old boy admitted to be the gunman. Along with another suspect, he was arrested by SPO1 Rene Sultan of the Cebu City Security Service Group (SSG), who happens to live in the area.

Josephine Seares Fer-nandez, 45, wife of Petty Officer Olivero Fernandez, 44, a member of the Philippine Navy died of gunshot wounds in the left shoulder and face minutes after she arrived at the emergency room of Chong Hua Hospital.

The other victim, Imelda Pascual Enecillo, 37, Josephine’s neighbor, the Cebu City Medical Center for a gunshot wound in the left forearm.

Michael (not the boy’s real name) and William Borja of Mc Arthur Blvd. were arrested.

In an interview with reporters at the Homicide Section yesterday, Michael said he and four companions were on their way home past 4 a.m. after attending a disco when another group started mauling them.

Michael said one of the members of the rival group hit him with a mono-block chair. He suffered lacerations in the face and arms.

He denied he is a fraternity member but he has a tattoo bearing the insignia of a known fraternity is found on his right wrist.

Michael said he ran to the house of a friend and borrowed a homemade shotgun, locally known as pugakhang, and returned.

When he saw the rival group, he fired at them once.

But he missed. Instead, he hit Fernandez and Enecillo, who were standing nearby.

Michael said he threw the shotgun away after firing it. Police failed to retrieve it.

SPO2 Rey Cuyos said charges will be filed today against Michael, Borja and three other suspects. (JST)
