Yap tops Cetba year end finals

JAKE Yap knocked down 1,793 pins to claim the 2006 Cebu Tenpin Bowling Association Bowler of the Year title last Tuesday at the SM Bowling Center.

Yap, who has a zero handicap, started low in the first game with only 196 pinfalls, but started to move at a good pace as he never scored below the 200-pinfall barrier in the next seven games.

Yap also pulled a series-high 257 pinfalls in game four.

John Getsataya, who plays with a handicap of 12, finished at second with 1,662 pinfalls.

Getsataya faltered in his bid to chase Yap as he opened with a 188 in game one and dropped 199 in game three. In the rest of the games, he scored above 200.

Inday de Gracia is at close third, just five pins off from Getsaya, as she tallied 1,657.

Rey Villarde, who has a handicap of seven, took fourth place after hitting 1,648 pinfalls, while Hitoshi Aoyama dropped 1,608 pins to settle for fifth place.

The rest of the top 10 in the grand finals are Joe Garces (1,599), Ronan Barredo (1,589), Boy Kua (1,566), Alex Damole (1,554) and Ernest Tan (1,550).

A day before Yap claimed the bowler of the year title, Joey Barbas downed 1,768 pins to rule the November Bowler of the Month, the last qualifying tournament to the grandfinals. Yap finished second with 1,729 and was awarded the December title, earning him the trip to the finals.

Barbas, who has a handicap of 10, hit the 200-mark seven times to win the monthly title and had series-high 236 and a low 191.

Ben Miranda settled for third with 1,674 pinfalls,

De Gracia, though scoring a tournament-high 258, settled for fourth place with 1,652. (JAF )
