Faelnar named in hit-run case

THE barangay captain of Guadalupe, Cebu City was accused of hit-and-run by a 25-year-old man Sunday night.

Renante Laurente, 25, said Barangay Captain and City Councilor Eugenio “Jing-Jing” Faelnar even backed into and tried to run him over.

Laurente hails from Tandag, Surigao del Sur and is temporarily residing in his brother’s house in Singson Compound, Guadalupe.

Exaggerated

Faelnar admitted hitting a man with his Toyota Fortuner. But he said the incident was blown out of proportion to destroy his political career.

In a radio dyLA interview, an irate Faelnar accused his political rivals of exaggerating the accident.

Faelnar admitted hitting a man with his Toyota Fortuner. But he said the incident was blown out of proportion to destroy his political career.

In a radio dyLA interview, an irate Faelnar accused his political rivals of exaggerating the accident.

Laurente, who was also interviewed by the same radio station, said he was heading for home after buying bread at a bakery when a car suddenly bumped him from behind.

Laurente said he fell on the ground and almost lost consciousness.

He failed to recognize the driver. But several witnesses, particularly the trisikad drivers who had parked their vehicles nearby, said it was Faelnar who was driving the car, which has a special plate “Guadalupe.”

Laurente said Faelnar did not even bother to take him to a hospital.

Instead, Faelnar allegedly sped off and left him on the road.

Laurente said the police and the City Traffic Operations Management (Citom) tried to downplay the incident.

He said 10 minutes after he was hit, a barangay patrol car arrived in the area with three policemen on board.

He said he was carried to the patrol car but was not taken to the hospital until 20 minutes later.

Two policemen, whom he failed to identify, left the patrol car and spoke with someone inside a nearby hotel while another policeman stayed with him.

About five minutes later, Laurente saw the car that bumped him pass by. He pointed at it to the policeman. But the policeman ignored him, he said.

He was later taken to the Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC). He checked out of the hospital yesterday morning.

Laurente said a barangay councilor named Bob went to the hospital and told him his expenses will be taken care of.

Laurente showed up at the Citom office at 10 a.m. yesterday to file a report about the incident.

He said he was given a cold treatment. The traffic investigator, he said, did not even jot down the details of the incident.

A check by Sun.Star Cebu at the Citom office showed that the investigation is handled by SPO1 Apollo Machacon.

An initial investigation report recorded in the Citom blotter and read to Sun.Star Cebu by PO3 Annabelle Dumaguit said a white Toyota Revo with a special plate that read “Guadalupe” hit Laurente last Sunday night.

The report said Laurente was crossing the street when a car suddenly backed up, hitting a traffic sign and then Laurent.

A patrol car owned by Barangay Guadalupe with two policemen on board arrived and brought Laurente to CCMC, the report said.

Sun.Star Cebu called up the Guadalupe Police Station but was told they did not receive any alarm involving Faelnar.

Laurente said he would have wanted to file a case against Faelnar, but he is not sure if there will be witnesses who come forward and testify against the barangay captain.

Laurente’s brother Bobby, who is an errand boy of lawyer Salvador Solima, said he will wait for his employer to arrive from Bantayan Island to ask for advice whether to press charges against Faelnar.

In a radio dyLA interview, Faelnar said he was not sure if he bumped a man or a vehicle.

But interviewed again by the same station later in the afternoon, Faelnar admitted driving the car and hitting a man.

He said he failed to see the man because there was a drizzle that time.

“It was drizzling. I did not see that he was on the left side of the vehicles. I could not see clearly. I only knew I hit something when some people said I did so. Maybe it was a tricycle or a trisikad,” he said.

When he learned that a man was hit, he called up his son Dino to take care of the victim.

He said he did not get off from the car because it was raining and that he was told by the people around that the injury sustained by the victim was only minor.

“I called through the radio so the victim can be taken care of. I spent for the expenses. I’d pay even it wasn’t my fault),” Faelnar said.

He denied trying to finish Laurente’s off.

“They’re blowing up the report. I know who these people are. I’m not a fool to do that. It’s a new car and I would use it in finishing him off)?” he said.

“Ingon ana gyud na basta duol na eleksyon, ang atong kontra mangguwa dayon. Wa gyud nay hinungdan. Unsa gud nang klaseha sa isyu gud. Nga wala man gyud na tuyoa. Ok rako ana kay mas maayo mosikat ko’g maayo (It’s always like that.

Your enemies come out as the election approaches. It’s not an issue. I didn’t do it intentionally. But it’s fine with me. It will make me more popular),” Faelnar said. (JST)
