Barrita: Guv’s absence
By Eddie O. Barrita

LIKE the sun retiring into the night after a hectic day, Cebu Gov. Gwen Garcia stepped out of the limelight and stopped giving press conferences and statements to the media.

She was simply avoiding fault-finders in the media.

How long will all be quiet in the Capitol front?

Long days of rain, which at times expose some leaks, make us crave for the sun.

Will Gov. Gwen’s absence make “sanctimonious” opinion makers yearn for her?

But then absence also makes the heart grow fonder—for someone else.

Ambassador Marciano Paynor Jr., chairman of the 12th Asean summit, said it's 500 percent definite the summit will be held in Cebu in January.

If you still doubt something that is 500 percent definite, we’ll ask Ambassador Paynor to raise it to 1000 percent.

Even Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who will make a whirlwind trip to Europe, is attending the East Asian summit that will follow the Asean summit.

Cebu City Michael Rama was right, the summit’s postponement has caused disappointment among Cebuanos.

Keeping it in Cebu will somehow make up for it, he said.

Philippine Catholic bishops are launching their own cha-cha.

No, it’s not Charter change, but character change among Filipinos.

I hope this cha-cha applies to all, including members of the clergy, named or unnamed.

***

Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago said the bishops’ cha-cha “is a confession, an admission” of their failure in shaping the Filipino Catholics’ character all these centuries.

Call that as the bishops’ mea culpa.
