He said skepticism and indifference are the same reasons the Catholic Church-led prayer rally last Sunday failed to attract a huge crowd.
“Why did we not attend, for instance, the prayer rally last Sunday? What was the reason behind it? It seems that there is now a skepticism or indifference in our society. We have to do away with that,” the cardinal said.
The anti-Charter change rally also failed to draw the cardinal’s attendance, but he said that he chose to hold his own rally indoors—through education inside the church.
“We have been telling them that we have organized our prayer rally in every parish in the archdiocese. We will do that inside the church,” Vidal said.
“There is more prayer there than just coming together, and there is more respect for God and our neighbor,” said the cardinal of the stand of the presbyteral council for priests to just hold an education campaign regarding Charter change (Cha-cha), rather than protests on the streets.
Vidal, though, agreed that there should be character change, as raised by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines.
“How would we like to confront Cha-cha? They said it should not be Charter change but character change,” he said.
But the prelate opined that character change should not be limited to the nation’s leaders but should apply to every Cebuano.
While he admits that it is not easy, changing for the better can be done through patience.
“But the real love is when you are giving yourself to others or you share what you have with others in the spirit of Jesus Christ who really loves us and became man to save us from our sins,” Vidal told reporters.
