Chiongbian: The 4th Nike Golf Southern Junior Classic
By Edgar R. Chiongbian
Teetime

THE 4th edition of the Nike Golf Southern Junior Classic gets underway today at Cebu Country Club and ends tomorrow. This golf tournament is a very successful year-end tournament under the CCC jungolf program, which has become the most popular invitational tournament for the jungolfers in the Visayas and Mindanao. Jovi Neri, the CCC jungolf chairman, is the prime mover and architect of this event, and has made it a real thing for the jungolfers in the south.

The major sponsor of the event is Nike with the support of Pacsports Philippines, the exclusive distributor of Nike Golf in the Philippines. The field has been limited to the first 100 jungolfers to keep it very competitive. So if you got shut out this year, make sure to practice more and register early next year so maybe you can get in on the action, fun and the challenge.

The Federation of Senior Golfers had their Christmas tournament yesterday at Alta Vista. I guarantee you that these oldies but goodies had a grand slam awarding party after the achy breaky time on the golf course. Give you the results on next column.

And the CCC ladies chapter played their version of the CCC President’s Cup yesterday, one week ahead of men’s tournament, which is on Dec. 29 and 30. Not to worry because they will have the awarding on the same schedule as the men so everything’s well that ends well.

For those not aware of this, the first day scores of the two-day President’s Cup will count as the monthly medal tournament for December, making it a 2-in-one tournament. While the CCC ladies stayed pure and kept their monthly medal tourney completely on a separate schedule on Dec. 27.

We have very good news for Mactan Island GC members and fellow golfers who play at MIGC. The new MIGC chairman M/Gen. Tolentino, also a diehard golfer and is no stranger to MIGC, has retained Ret. B/Gen. Joya as general manager. This is a very wise and popular decision because the golfers love this guy and know exactly where his heart is. We only hope that he will be given the total support by the board to finish the work he has already started.

And coming out like a big bang for the Christmas fun golf at Alta Vista is Gene Aznar. We have missed him in the winner’s circle for sometime now. I guess he took a break from winning tournaments and now has a new hole-in-one in the pocket with loads of cash and prizes to go along as the overall champion of the tournament. Just like Tiger Woods, ha Gene? Is this a warning for things to come?

The Rotary Club of Cebu will have their Christmas party today at the Community Scouts Rehabilitation Center near Pier 4 to bring cheers and Christmas gifts to the street children who are under the care of the city of Cebu. This is one of the major continuing projects of RC Cebu that is also supported by the Rotary Club of Yotsukaido, Japan through the recommendation of RC Cebu. The chair and co-chair of this Christmas event are Rotarians Jake Sungahid and Anastacio Cubos.

Last week, the Friends of the Poor also had a Christmas party at Casino Espanol. This very special civic group is composed of prominent ladies of Cebu that plays mahjong three times a week for fun in as many years as one can remember.

In the last 20 years they organized themselves in order to raise money for the poor, thus their given name. Every year around Christmas, they give donations to their beneficiaries with amounts you would never figure possible. Congratulations and a big thank you!

Golf Tip: Many short hitters block their shots by steering the club down the target line. And the only reason why they go straight is because the player has intentionally closed the clubhead at address. This is like doing two wrong things to make a right.

There are many reasons why block shots occur but the most common is because your right arm fails to rotate over your left arm through impact, preventing the clubface to square up to the ball at impact. To avoid this, make sure you are not standing too close to the ball because this will hinder your shoulder rotation. Also check that your left hand grip is at the position where the “V” of the left thumb and forefinger is pointed slightly to the right of your chin.
