Manny top pug of 2006

FILIPINO ring idol Manny Pacquiao ended the year as the best pound-for-pound fighter, according to East Side Boxing.

James Slater, a noted American boxing columnist, who also writes for EastSideBoxing.com, put Pacquiao over Floyd “Pretty Boy” Mayweather Jr. in his year ending best pound-for-pound fighter for its final release dated Dec. 22.

The World Boxing Media (worldboxingmedia.com) also placed Pacquiao on top of all the fighters around the world as the no.1 pound-for-pound boxer, besting Mayweather and Winky Wright on the list dated Dec. 8.

However, Ring Magazine, known as the “Bible of Boxing,” ranked Mayweather over Pacquiao as the best pound-for-pound fighter in 2006.

Consistent 3rd

Wright is also the consistent third placer among the three sites.

According to Slater, Pacquiao’s three fights this year earned him the nod as the world’s best pound-for-pound fighter over Mayweather.

Pacquiao, carrying a 43-3-2, win-loss-draw record with 34 knockouts, beat Morales twice, first by a 10th round knockout last January and a 3rd round TKO last November. Last July he also scored a 12th round unanimous decision over Oscar Larios in Manila.

Slater said Mayweather (37-0, 24KOs), who has a ring date with Oscar De La Hoya in May, had two successful wins over Zab Judah and Carlos Baldomir this year both by decisions, costing him the year’s top fighter accolade.

Following Pacquiao, Mayweather and Wright on Slater’s list are light heavyweight Bernard Hopkins (47-4-1, 32KOs), WBC/WBO middleweight champion Jermaine Taylor (26-0, 17KOs), WBC Super featherweight champion Marco Antonio Barrera (63-0-4, 42KOs), IBF/WBO super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe (42-0, 31KOs), light welterweight Jose Luis Castillo (54-7-1, 47KOs), WBA welterweight champion Ricky Hatton (41-0, 30KOs) and super-welterweight Shane Mosley (43-4, 37KOs).

WMB list

On the World Boxing Media list, Calzaghe, from the United Kingdom, comes fourth followed by Barrera, Taylor, welterweight champion Miguel Cotto (28-0, 23) of Puerto Rico, WBC super-welterweight champion Oscar De La Hoya (38-4, 30KOs), bantamweight champion Rafael Marquez (36-3, 32KOs), British fighter Hatton, Australian IBF champion Vic Darch-inyan (27-0, 21KOs), and the inactive WBA flyweight champion Lorenzo Parra (27-0, 17KOs) of Venezuela.

Following Mayweather, Pacquiao and Wright in the Ring Magazine list are Taylor, Hopkins, Barrera, Rafael Marquez, Hatton, Castillo and Calzaghe. (RCM)
