PB approves bonus for Capitol workers

THE Cebu Provincial Board (PB) yesterday held a special session to approve the supplemental budget of P23.24 million for the additional cash gift of the Capitol’s 2,000 employees.

The budget was approved on first, second and third reading so the departments may now process the release of the money.

Every Capitol employee, as well as elected officials, is entitled to the cash gift, said PB committee on budget chairman Victor Maambong.

He said the measure is Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia’s way of showing her gratitude to her employees.

The extra cash gift will be equivalent to one month’s salary and in no case less than P10,000, so employees with a monthly salary of less than P10,000 will still receive P10,000.

Maambong considers the extra benefit as “not too much and not too less.”

Garcia made the announcement during Capitol’s Christmas party last Saturday, citing her policy on rewarding efficiency and professionalism.

Garcia will donate her bonus to the Provincial Employees’ Association of Cebu (Peace).

The release of the bonus is based on a memorandum issued by the Department of Budget and Management on Dec. 18.

It states that the local government units may give extra cash gifts to their personnel, and that this has been authorized by the President.

The amount will be charged against savings of the local government units.

Garcia recognized the efforts of all the departments in helping her implement her programs.

She considers 2006 as the most challenging year since she assumed office.

Aside from the several projects that she implemented simultaneously, the Province also had to build and spend for an international convention center in just eight months.

The Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) was built after President Arroyo told Garcia that Cebu will be the venue of the 12th Asean Summit. (MBG)
