THE Salazar Institute of Technology (SIT) outlasted the first batch of contenders in the first day of the Hermogenes Bacarisas Cup Softball Tournament last Sunday at the Basak Elementary School grounds.

SIT defeated Pau D’ Arco, 6-1, in the final of the one-day tournament. Sibonga settled for third place after defeating Locan 10-5.

SIT and Pau D’ Arco both pulled off emphatic victories earlier in the day to gain entry to the final round. SIT trounced Locan, 14-1, while Pau D’ Arco blanked Sibonga, 10-0. The winners advanced to the title round, while the losers battled for third-place honors.

Series

The tournament is the first of three day-long leagues, which will serve as a dry run for the Cebu Softball Open Tournament, the premier softball league in Cebu. The event is organized by the Cebu Association of Batted Sports (Cabs).

Four different teams will play in the one-day tournaments for three straight Sundays.

A team’s participation in the three tournaments will also serve as the confirmation of their entry in the Softball Open, which is slated in mid-January.

Another batch of teams will see action this Sunday, while the last four teams compete on Jan. 7.

Prizes

The winners are given prizes courtesy of Cebu City Sports Commissioner Rolly Diorico and local officials Ray Salgado and Ely Tabar.

Meanwhile, Cabs will organize a Reunion Cup this Saturday, after a number of Cebuano batters came home for the holidays. Taking part in the competition are national team mainstays Jasper Cabrera, Ben Mariveles, Oscar Bradshaw and Darius Bacarisas, with RP coach Isaac Bacarisas. The RP team recently finished second in an Asian competition.

Also expected to join are Australian-based siblings Arturo, Rustom and Sorab Ladisla.
