THE world’s political and religious leaders were divided over whether Saddam Hussein’s exe-cution yesterday would serve as a milestone toward peace—or motivation for further conflict in the Middle East.

In Washington, US President George W. Bush said Saddam was executed “after receiving a fair trial—the kind of justice he denied the victims of his brutal regime.”
