Wednesday, January 03, 2007 CCSC to create boxing team, hold competitions in barangays
TO address its diminishing status in amateur boxing, the Cebu City Sports Commission is now finalizing details for the creation of the Team Cebu City boxing.
Councilor Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba, the vice chairman of CCSC, told Sun.Star Cebu that the Cebu City Sports Complex boxing gym will be operational soon.
“We now have the facilities. We have bought the equipment. The only thing needed now are the final touches for the gym. We will be re-launching it soon, maybe two weeks from now, before the 2007 Sinulog Grand Mardi Gras,” Alcoseba said.
Alcoseba said they will hold an information drive about the boxing pool through the barangay captains and in all public schools in the city.
“We will inform the barangays and the public schools, that if they have talents, to have them join the tryouts, which will be conducted at the Cebu City Sports Complex. And from those who will try out, we will form the boxing pool, to which the City will give its full support,” said Alcoseba.
The City will house, give allowances and finance the trainees. There will be three trainees per weight class for the age-group divisions.
The CCSC has tapped the services of former Asian Games gold medalist and Olympian Efren Tabanas and former world champion Doddie Boy Peñalosa to handle the training of the athletes. (RCM)
