UC Maritime students get scholarship grants

A JAPANESE shipping company recently entered into a memorandum of agreement with the University of Cebu for the scholarship grants of 40 Maritime students.

In addition to the 12 students the shipping firm takes in each year for cadetship, they will also give some students scholarships, starting from the second year level enrollees.

Full tuition

“The grant will cover full tuition, board and lodging and some allowance,” Capt. Leonito Mirande, crewing manager and director who also practiced on board the vessels of Iiino Marine Services (IMS) Co. Ltd.

They will pick the top engine and deck students. During the apprenticeship, the cadets will go aboard the IMS oceangoing vessels and will each receive a montly allowance of not less than $350.

The company will also take care of the cadets’ transportation from Manila to the port of embarkation.

Growing need

“We need 20 deck and 20 engine cadets every year,” Mirande said on the company’s growing need for staff aboard their international vessels.

IMS president and executive senior managing officer Capt. Takahiko Matsumoto says Filipino seafarers are “very diligent, can speak English very well and have good character.”

The shipping company’s team is composed of 70 percent Filipinos.
