Speak out: Problem with fitness gym's billing
By Ron Robie

I AM an American who bought a membership at a fitness gym in one of the malls in Cebu city last October.

I have had (and am still having) numerous problems with their billing system.

Basically, any time a manager tells you that your account is being credited, or won't be charged, your debit/credit account will still be charged monthly (sometimes twice).

I originally wanted them to reverse the charges, but the manager told me it is such a corporate hassle (why?), and flat-out refused!

It happened to me three times, with two different managers.

I tried to cancel the membership before I left to come home, but the manager, who was always on the phone every time I called, was not in the gym the two times I went there.

I sent two e-mails to the address on the manager's business card and got no response.

Going through their local website won't work, and you can forget trying to e-mail the corporate office in England, as it not set
up to deal with international queries.

My latest attempt (and last) to get hold of a manager at the Cebu facility got me a promise of an e-mail response.

As I have little faith in that happening, I will go to my bank and tell them to stop paying the gym’s debit requests.

That will teach me to trust verbal contracts.

This is truly a large, faceless corporation, and they hide their mistakes behind it.

To be fair, the place is very nice, modern, clean, and well equipped.

The staff is uber-friendly, even as they tell you that your money is gone, and you are screwed.

In short, I will never walk into that place on my next trip, or on any future trips to Cebu.
