Top teams to join Cebu champ’ship
By Marian C. Baring
Sun.Star Correspondent

THE top collegiate volleyball teams will be battling to be the country’s best team as the Cebu Volleyball Association’s (Ceva’s) Challenge of the Champions takes center stage in early February at the University of San Carlos (USC) Gym.

The champions in the Men’s and Women’s divisions from the different inter-school competitions in Manila, Cebu, Negros and Davao will be battling for supremacy.

Competing are champions from National Colleges Athletic Association (NCAA), Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) and the top teams in Negros and Davao. Cebu will be represented by the winners and runners up of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc (Cesafi).

Davao champion

NCAA will be represented by the San Sebastian women’s team and Philippine Christian University men’s team, while University of St. La Salle will represent Negros in both divisions just like Davao City’s Ateneo de Davao University.

Cesafi champion USC will banner Cebu’s colors together with the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) of Grace Antigua. Since Cebu is the host, it will also field the runners-up—USJ-R for men’s and University of Southern Philippines Foundation for the women’s class.

The UAAP does not have a representative as of the moment as its volleyball competitions are still ongoing. However, its winners last year—the Far Eastern University and De La Salle University—may represent UAAP in the Challenge of Champions.

Just recently, Ceva organized a province-wide competition, the Governor’s Unity Volleyball Cup for women, which attracted almost all of Cebu province’s cities and municipalities. It wrapped up last December in Mandaue City.

Aside from this, the framework for the Cebu Volleyball Open is already in the offing. The two tournaments comprise the early part of Ceva calendar for this year.
