Serna: Sheryn the actor

WHEN Sheryn Regis came to Cebu last weekend, one of the questions we asked her after her mini-concert at the SM City Cebu Entertainment Plaza was her list of projects this year.

Aside from the bar and mall tours for the promotion of her third album entitled Sheryn Regis: Modern Jukebox Collection, her management group is set to test if she has the acting talent.

She’ll be made to guest in a teleseries soon. Banat News’ Kriss Relatado butted in with: ‘Don’t they know you were the original Bulakna in Kadaugan sa Mactan some years back?’

Sheryn sheepishly (naughtily would be more appropriate) smiled and said, ‘They don’t know I’m an actress.’ Sheryn was under the tutelage of the award-winning Al Evangelio, tackling challenging roles not only in Kadaugan but also in Calamba Joe and Buhing Kalbaryo, to name some.

Despite her scheduled US concert tour with Jed Madela, Roselle Nava and Frenchie Dy in April, she might squeeze into her schedule another stint under her mentor Evangelio if the plan to cast her in this year’s staging of Kalbaryo pushes through. If negotiations sail smoothly, and if time permits.

She describes her latest album as more masa compared to the first two. It contains Joey Albert’s I Remember The Boy, Leah Navarro’s Ang Pag-ibig Kong Ito, Vina Morales’ Alam Mo Ba, Manilyn Reynes’ Sayang na Sayang, a new Vehnee Saturno composition entitled Di Na Ba Babalik Pa?, the theme song of the new ABS-CBN teleseries Maria Flordeluna and her own (!) composition Pusong Lito, among others.

Amidst all these, Sheryn badly misses the serenity of her hometown Carcar, and the chance to do things she wants to do away from the prying eyes of intrigue-laden showbusiness denizens.

The Cebu entertainment circle has been mourning the demise of noted choreographer-director Doy Arradaza, who succumbed to cardiac arrest a day after the start of the new year in Ormoc City.

Who will then take over the responsibilities left behind by Doy, like the Ms. Mandaue search which he painstakingly nurtured for many years? PR man Jonji Gonzales came up with the answer when he called up one night with the news that the committee, headed by Lollypop Ouano-Dizon, has decided to tap the services of ace choreographer-director Junjet Primor to do the job.

With this development, expect new ideas to be infused into the long-running beauty search.

It’s too bad that Cebuano Starstruck The Next Level hopeful Chad Burden was excluded from the final 14 who will fight it out for the four major slots, even before he could fully display his talents.

Known to just a few, Chad was trained in drama class back in Holland where he stayed with his Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) parents for 19 years. His only drawback was his inability to speak Tagalog fluently, which he has already started to correct.

He says he can also dance and sing. Being excluded from the final group does not mean it’s the end of the quest for fame.
The list of successful performers who were non-winners when they joined talent searches is long, and it may become even longer with the inclusion of Chad.

With his strong determination to succeed in any endeavor he puts his heart into, the inclusion to the list may not be that long a wait.

As the 12th Asean Summit finally goes into full gear, and as the Pista Senyor opens with all the excitement and fun that goes with the festivity, entertainment joints in the metropolis likewise unveil the packages they have prepared. Ratsky, for example, will have the Wings Tours 2007 tonight starting at 8 p.m.

The country’s top rock bands, Bamboo and Urbandub, are the featured performers. Be counted in.

Gaisano Main and Country Mall contribute to the excitement of the Pista Senyor and Sinulog festivity by bringing in GMA 7 star Jennylyn Mercado for the second draw of A Million Thanks raffle promo next Sat., Jan. 20.

Her appearance comes a day after the 12-day Asean Summit and Festival Sale closes. If you availed of the sale, you really have a reason to see Jennylyn in person and perhaps be called out as the winner of either a Mazda 3 car, a color TV, a washing machine or a stand fan.
