VAAA champion ‘to represent Cebu’ in BAP National Championships

THE champion of the inaugural Visayas Amateur Athletic Association (VAAA) will represent Cebu in the 61st National Students Basketball Championships on Feb. 25 to March 3 in Du-maguete City.

Basketball Referees Commission in Central Visayas (Barecom) Commissioner Jose “Boy” Murillo, who is also the commissioner of the VAAA basketball tournament, told Sun.Star Cebu the winner of the 10-team competition will go to the National Inter-Collegiate championships.

“I was told by Yayoy Alcoseba (BAP vice president for the Visayas) the champion will go to the national championships,” Murillo said.

However, Murillo is still planning how to conduct the eliminations of the high-school teams.

Last year, the University of San Carlos Warriors went to represent the Central Visayas in Legaspi City after winning the zonals over the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars.

The University of Southern Philippine Baby Jaguars and Salazar Colleges of Science and Institute of Technology Baby Skyblazers were the representatives in the Inter-Secondary championships held in Camarines Norte last year.

VAAA has four members from Cebu, three from Dumaguete City, two from Tagbilaran City and one from Ormoc City.

As the host, Dumaguete City is allowed to field two collegiate teams and three high schools teams in the national championships.

Meanwhile, VAAA will have its final elimination round in Tagbilaran City this weekend.

The Holy Name University (HNU) Falcons will play against the Foundation University (FU) Greyhounds on Saturday, while the Bohol Institute of Technology Cruisers will play Fu on Saturday.

HNU and FU are still winless with 0-2 and 0-3 records, respectively, while BIT holds a 1-2 card, all belong to Bracket A.

The USJ-R Jaguars and Southwestern University Cobras both hold identical 3-0 cards and are the top seeds in Bracket A. (RCM)
