Barrita: Take a bow
By Eddie O. Barrita

“DAGHANG salamat, Sugbo,” President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said, giving Cebu high marks for hosting the 12th Asean summit.

Take a bow, Cebu.

Anyone can heckle and nitpick.

But host a summit or build an international convention center?

Even terrorists took a holiday.

***

Indian diplomat Bhagwant Bishnoi said it was “the best summit so far” and the “summit venues were breathtakingly beautiful, exotic and the best we’ve ever seen.”

I believe him. he’s a diplomat.

***

Summits, unlike festivities, end in a whimper instead of a bang.

With all the food prepared by foreign chefs for delegates and heads of states, I hope this summit ended at least with a burp.

***

A Sun.Star reader, Peary Aleonar Jr., noting Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña’s visible absence in summit activities, asked: “Where’s Mayor Osmeña?”

Last time I checked, he was photographed with rallyists.

***

Chief Supt. Silverio Alarcio Jr., Central Visayas police director, said Mayor Osmeña’s presence in rallies prevented any violent dispersal.

For once, the mayor also showed he was able to rein in the rallyists from marching to the ceremonial routes and the Cebu International Convention Center.

***

It seems Mayor Osmeña is very close to militant groups.

I hope he will not be like the limerick of a young lady who smiled as she rode on a tiger.

They returned from the ride with the lady inside, and the smile on the face of the tiger.
