Governor drops street-dancing plan

CONTRARY to her initial plan, Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia will no longer join the Sinulog street parade after her son Paulo prevailed on her to heed warnings on security.

Unlike last year, she will dance only during the opening and closing of this Sunday’s parade.

Garcia started practicing her dance last night with the dancers from Daanbantayan’s Haladaya Festival.

The governor had wanted to join the street dancing. “But my own son is contradicting my wishes and he is not alone, he is joined by so many other voices.”

In October last year, the Cebu Provincial Police Office (CPPO) admitted they received information on an alleged plan to assassinate Garcia and Mandaue City Mayor Thadeo Ouano.

The CPPO increased the number of police personnel to guard the governor.

Garcia had said the threat will not prevent her from going to remote areas, but then CPPO director Vicente Loot said they shifted to “paranoid” mode since Garcia’s pronouncement of an all-out war against insurgents. She heads the Regional Peace and Order Council and created the Provincial Anti-Insurgency Task Force.

Garcia will dance in thanksgiving for the completion of the Cebu International Convention Center and the success of the Asean summit, which she said were her prayers when she danced in the parade last year. (JPM)
