MVBA pre-season slated on Jan. 26

GOING into its second season, the Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) is now heavy preparing for its pre-season tournament-–-the Gov. Oscar Moreno Cup, which will start Jan. 26 to 31 at the Xavier University Gym in Cagayan de Oro City.

Prizes at stake for the champion total P100,000.

MVBA chairman and tournament host Gov. Oscar Moreno and his Holcim-Pryce Pharma-MisOr will have their hands full against back-to-back champions M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City, the Cebu Landmasters, the Lano Royals and guest squad Pagadian City.

In a related development, the Royals welcome its newly appointed head coach Christopher Abellan, who will make his debut at the Lanao bench in this tournament.

MisOr, on the other hand, has intensified its line-up with the hiring of Cebuano players Mark Ababon and center Rino Berame together with UV Green Lancers assistant coach Al Solis, who will sit as the team consultant.

Centerpiece

The centerpiece of the tournament is still the much-hyped rivalry of M. Lhuillier’s Stephen Padilla and Holcim-Pryce’s Gilbert Demape, who are both expected to lead their respective teams to another championship showdown.

Following the Cagayan de Oro City swing, the MVBA will hold its final pre-season competition in Cebu City during the Charter Day Celebration, a week before the opening of the First Conference.

Meanwhile, MVBA are set to announce the newest additions to its family as they are now considering the applications of Tacloban, Lapu-Lapu, Minglanilla, Danao, Bogo, Butuan and Davao Oriental to be part of the two-year-old organization. (RCM)
