Tuesday, January 30, 2007 World champ to hold exhibition
The jungolfers of Cebu Country Club will have the rare opportunity of playing a top-caliber golfer of their age in world champion jungolfer Wolen Superal, who is set to hold a two-day exhibition best-ball match on Feb. 17 and 18.
Superal, 14, is best known for his record-setting triumph in the 2005 Callaway Junior World Golf Championships in San Diego, California where he shot a tournament record 21-under par for three days that earned him the Class C (11-12 years) crown.
Another record feat he accomplished was a 12-under par 60 in the fabled north course of Canlubang back in the 2003 Samsung Jungolf Tour. He is a veteran campaigner in international junior golf events, where he regularly collects trophies. Lately, he has been joining more men’s tournaments despite his tender age.
Youngest
In November last year, Superal teamed up with fellow jungolfer Marcel Puyat to take the over-all lowest gross honors in the Founder’s Cup—Orchard Golf and Country Club’s member-guest invitational. Their combined age of 27 years made them, perhaps, the youngest ever pair in history to win a member-guest tourney anywhere in the country.
Amateur
A month later, Superal became one of the youngest ever match-play qualifiers in the Philippine Amateur tournament.
“We hope that our juniors will draw inspiration from Wolen’s style of play, which is far advanced for his age,” said CCC’s jungolf chairman Atty. Jovi Neri. “It is a great honor to have a player of his caliber and credentials to join our juniors.”
The best ball format will feature teams of juniors who will be assigned designated holes on where they will play against Superal. In addition to the two-day exhibition match, Superal will provide a golf clinic where he will share his secrets and give tips to the juniors on the afternoons of Feb. 16 and 17. This special event is sponsored by Da Vinci’s Pizza, which will cater the awarding ceremonies on Feb. 18. (PR)
