Thursday, February 01, 2007 Seares: Pregnant and unwed SK chief By Pachico A. Seares News Sense
THERE'S this story about a woman who told a suitor that the man she'll marry "must be brave as a lion but not forward; handsome as Apollo, but not conceited; wise as Solomon but meek as a lamb; a man who is kind to every woman but loves only me."
"Fine," the man said. He didn't marry her. He got her pregnant.
Not a happy ending but maybe that was what they settled for to be happy.
Last Monday, the Cebu Provincial Board ruled that a woman, 22, pregnant and unwed, sitting as youth council chief of Consolacion, Cebu was not guilty of conduct unbecoming of a public official.
Maybe gross negligence---one other sin she's accused of because of, ah, reckless lovemaking---but not immorality.
Example, model
Purists who insist on a woman requiring marriage before bedding might scream over the PB stand. They'll say, OK ra if she were a private person but she's a public leader, a youth model.
But maybe they won't mind. As many others, who see that most public leaders flunk moral standards, don't give a pip. On spousal fidelity, for example, few public officials will pass Eve's test. Eve, I heard, counted Adam's ribs whenever he came home late.
Two other things: (a) There have been many pregnant, unwed SK leaders. Isn't PB encouraging more of them? Nonsense.
(b) PB Members Vic Maambong, Agnes Magpale, and Cary Kintanar can very well run a radio program for the lovelorn. Cheers.
