Go: Coffee Nation
By Charlene Go
LaMyerda

I HAVE always appreciated the panache that we Filipino’s have when it comes to taste, food, and dining. We may be known to be quite stingy at times, but when it all boils down to satisfying our taste buds, budget no longer becomes an issue.

Coffee has always been a drink to complete our mornings, or any part of the day when we need a bit of a jump and, needless to say, majority of Filipinos are coffee drinkers.

When I was young, I remember wanting to grow up in a hurry because I wanted to be a “coffee drinker” myself. I have memories of my parents budgeting coffee to be consumed by our household help for their monthly intake. It seemed as though this was something that we just could not live without!

Eight years ago, before the, sitting-in-a-café-for-hours-watching-people-walk-by craze, or long before we even heard of Bo’s Coffee or Starbucks; there was instant Nescafe. Now, who would’ve ever thought we would pay P145 for a cup of coffee? And though it may seem that catching up over coffee with a price of P145 to pay is simply just a social call, I believe that most of us are coffee lovers. And yet, despite of having gourmet coffee throughout the day at the many established coffee shops around us, we still have the classic Nescafe at home.

Last week, a fiesta was held at the Ayala Center Cebu for the launching of Nescafe Classic First Pick, where not only did we mingle with familiar faces with our favorite cuppa and traditional Filipino kakanin (delicacies), but enjoyed a musical extravaganza with Nescafe’s fiesta-themed musicale. On tour with their mall show, was Manila-based Cebuano act Kadangyan, and Nescafe endorser Toni Gonzaga who performed in celebration of the outstanding quality taste of Nescafe.

I personally enjoyed the show since it demonstrated the Philippines’ fiesta, our enthusiasm and excitement for life which was very distinct… very Filipino. The Nescafe First Pick mall tour is set to continue on February 10 in Glorrietta Makati with Zsa Zsa Padilla and Toni Gonzaga, and finale on February 17 in Davao City with Heart Evangelista.
